Doctoral students in interdisciplinary programs are unique challenges in the formation of dissertation committees. Based on our experience as directors of three such programs (genetics of public health, urban design and planning as well as astrobiology) we offer the following suggestions.

Your first challenge

Find the optimal set of members - especially the right chair (or two femlies) for their committee. Committee members must:

The final decision on the appropriate content of your project is resting with the monitoring monitoring committee. You should work closely with the committee (especially the chairman) to determine the scope and content of your project. The committee leads her research and should meet regularly with them. The composition of the dissertation committees

The Dissertation Monitoring Committee must have at least four members, including the Chairman and the Graduate School Representer (GSR).
