As a follow-up to my last post, on the emerging seniors to help their college essays in the summer, here are some tips I have refined in the years to help students get the letter and to maintain their authentic, touching teenage voices. I hope that other leadership counselors and students will also find them useful.
The goal for every senior is to share a piece of his life story. I regularly emphasize that the essay is similar to a "memoir" - a short, informal autobiography, rather than a formal treatise. Admission decans want to develop a sense of each candidate about the transcript and test results.
Too often seniors assume that they need to write great importance over a significant occasion or event. Instead, I encourage students to focus on smaller experiences or events: a sibling relationship, part-time job, favorite showbies, family ritual or cool adventure.
If the school is in the meeting, I sometimes throw an essay "prompt" requests for discussions and invites students to record their informal answers about language notes (or equivalent functions) on their phones. I am constantly amazed by the way the students "speak their way through whole essays. Then I send seniors to enter designs and refine their idea. Absproving seniors could try out this approach in summer.
It is difficult enough to start writing without introducing an immediate limitation. I encourage seniors to focus on one and a half pages on one and a half sides, double-spaced, for a first design. Instead of counting words, you should roll out your story. (Trade secrecy: Candidates can upload more than 500 words in the joint application!) I urge the students to use and see the essay writing model (introduction, body, conclusion) used in their classes, where their topic leads. The best topic allows you to write easily and comfortably - and even have a little fun. You can always edit and shorten at a later point.
Admission officers enjoy late teenagers and read their work like their work. They do not expect students to write or write students such as trained lawyers, doctoral candidates or interviewees. Admission Decanes are looking forward to intelligent, down-to-earth, 17-year-old observations in the world. A Dean tells me regularly that he "loves teenangentity!"
Include with several parties in a college essay, can lead to frustration and mini disaster. Every person will have their own opinion. Some adults know the craft of writing, but do not really understand what approval officials are looking for. Parents often expect more formality than necessary. My best advice for students? Work closely with your advisory council consultant or the college consultant - and you may find another person (a teacher, a consultant or an informed friend), who understands the purpose of the essay.
Seniors should carefully correct their essays - never trust the spells with this job! I recommend students to read their text loudly, to catch mistakes (for example, missing commas!) And the evaluation of the flow and the uncomplicated phrasing. Reading a piece loud, emphasizes low and lumpy writing.Final drafts should also contain lively images with which readers can see, listen and imagine the situation or action.
