writing is not easy. Think about what you want to write how to pronounce it, and then you can get the words on paper that can sometimes be difficult for everyone. Because of my dyslexia and ADHD, however, writing was always difficult for me.
I'll sometimes compose a sentence in my head and then forget before I can write it down. Or when I write, I have a word to use it, but because I can not spell it, I will select another word. I often have a hard time to get into the rhythm of writing. It simply needs more mentored energy and work to write when it does for most people.
I have done very well with writing in high school because we did not want much long, outside the lesson, the writing of essay essay. Instead, most of the writing we have done was in class, timed essays because students are asked for the SAT, ACT and AP exams. It also helped me had accommodations like a long time, and no points for bad spelling, if my teacher could understand what I would write. I did not need anything else.
When I graduated from high school and began on a small liberal arts, the write requests came as shock.
All students of the first year at my school were required to take a "writing intensive" course. The purpose of this course was to teach students in writing on college by extensive practice. In the course of my first semester, I wrote almost 50 pages for this course alone. I had a very difficult time to adapt to the amount and quality of the expected letter outside the class.
Happy, during the student orientation, I was able to meet with the head of the disability services at my school. We went over my schedule and the accommodations I had received in high school. Then she mentioned that assistive technology-like dictate software and audiobooks had helped other students with similar learning and attention problems.
When I started writing in the first weeks of the school, I decided to give this tool a try. The first time when I tried dictation, I started seeing how this tool could help me.
As a person with ADHD and Dyslexia, I have difficulty with the memory and information processing. Dictat helped to facilitate the burden of the experiment to remember sentences before writing them down. It made me easier to bring my thoughts into words.
I think that's because the dictation integrates one of my biggest strengths with my writing process. I am a very verbal person. I have a much easier time to express my thoughts instead of helping them physically. Dictat allows me to speak loudly my ideas.
However, the benefits of dictating my papers did not come immediately. If you learn to use your voice to organize a paper and construct sentences and paragraphs takes time. It was almost a semester before I was familiar with the software, and the refining of my skills was a running process. I had to train myself to compose sentences verbally and tell them loud.
This was my first time with dictation software. I went through my entire K-12 career, without someone mentioned as an alternative spelling. If I used to be known from dictations, I would have asked my parents and my school to take it in my 504 plan.
Dictation is not perfect. If I did not clear words, sometimes a word for another. For example, "present" and "President" sound alike, and dictation software confuses them sometimes. The spell check does not pick up this mistake, as the word is enrolled correctly, although it does not make sense in the context. If I dictate quickly, I sometimes forget to add in punctuation, or do you faulty the wrong command.
Today I have about two years of dictation practice under my belt. Personally, I find it more useful to write roughly forced by papers than to edit and refine them. I end with the keyboard to polish my papers and finish what still needs me a lot of time.
Overall, however, the dictation helped me to adapt to the letter of college level. It helps me to complement it with other tools and tricks to support my letter. For example, I have a heavy time to read text on the computer, so I print my papers to edit them. My mother, who also has dyslexia, has also taught me a trick to edit papers - start at the end of the paper and read backwards. This helps me catch and correct mistakes.
Students like me with learning and attention problems have a lot to express the world. We can come with creative, thoughtful, intelligent things, but sometimes we need some help to bring our ideas into writing. And dictation can help. I write, but I write with my voice.
